Forest Bathing

…perceiving the forest consciously

“Forest bathing is by no means extraordinary. The results people achieve through it often are.”
Amos Clifford, American forest therapy guide

A walk in the forest does you good – our grandparents already knew that. Japanese researchers have now demonstrated why: forest air contains many bioactive substances, including terpenes. Breathing in these terpenes strengthens the immune system, lowers blood pressure and blood sugar levels, and activates the parasympathetic nervous system, the body’s resting nerve. Forest bathing, known in Japanese as “Shinrin Yoku”, makes use of these healing properties. The conscious breathing, feeling and sensing of the forest is intended to enhance well-being and reduce stress.

Everyday life is becoming increasingly hectic. Day after day, everyone is faced with demands that have to be managed. By moving mindfully and consciously through the forest, the body gradually slows down and bodily functions that often run at full speed without interruption begin to return to normal. It is possible to do without a mobile phone for a while – in the forest it is simply switched off. Instead of mobile phone sounds and electronic smog, you perceive nature and the scent of the forest with all your senses. Walking meditations enrich the experience in the forest and, if you like, you can even hug one of the trees and hold on to it during stormy times.
